Heavy Rigid (HR) - Unrestricted

To apply to upgrade to class HR you must have held a class C driver's licence for at least 24 months, or a class LR or MR driver's licence for at least 12 months.

Allied Commercial Training can offer class HR training in our vehicles, or additionally in your own vehicle as long as it meets the minimum requirements as set out by the Government of South Australia.

Vehicles typically covered by class HR include 3 or more axle delivery trucks; concrete agitators; waste management trucks; tippers; heavy mobile equipment like graders, on-site dump trucks, and rigid cranes; and any type of bus or coach.

ACT have found most applicants require 14 – 18 hours training to achieve competency in class HR.

Manoeuvres for HR Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) are:

  • Vehicle check

  • Reverse around a left hand corner

  • Up and Downhill starts

Additionally, HR Competency Based Training (CBT or logbook) will include reversing in a straight line.

To obtain an unrestricted HR licence, you must become proficient with the use of a constant mesh “roadranger” gearbox. We recommend consulting YouTube for an idea of how to use a roadranger gearbox.

Note – You may operate any vehicle which falls into a lower licence class, e.g. MR, LR or class C.
