Course Information

Northbound Commercial Training can offer training in our vehicles. Alternatively, we can train in your own vehicle as long as it meets the minimum requirements as set out by the Government of South Australia.

Licence Types


Multi Combination (MC)

A multi-combination (MC) licence is Australia's highest-level heavy vehicle licence, allowing you to drive any heavy combination, including B-doubles and road trains, which consist of a prime mover with two or more trailers.

Prerequisites

  • Must have held either a HR or HC Licence for 12 months.

  • Upgrading from HR to MC requires a HC assessment drive prior to the MC course

  • Must have a current & valid SA Licence

  • Medical conditions may affect eligibility

Northbound Commercial Training allow approximately 12 hours training to achieve competency from class HC to MC and approximately 22 hours training to achieve competency from HR to MC. This is judged on individual performance and some students may require additional time.

Heavy Combination (HC)

A HC (Heavy Combination) truck licence in Australia allows you to drive a prime mover with a single semi-trailer, or a truck with a trailer exceeding 9 tonnes GVM.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age – 19 years

  • Must have held either a MR or HR Licence for 12 months or be a Primary Producers Permit (restrictions apply).

  • Medical conditions may affect eligibility

  • Car to HC licence requires a HC TILE Course to be completed prior to the driver training

If you hold either a CAR or MR licence and wish to upgrade to an unrestricted HC licence, you will need to learn to drive with a manual “Roadranger” gearbox. We recommend consulting Youtube for an idea of how to use a “Roadranger" gearbox.

If you hold an unrestricted HR licence you can upgrade to a HC licence in an auto gearbox and still get an unrestricted HC licence.

Northbound Commercial Training allow approximately 21 hours training to achieve competency in class HC manual gearbox and approximately hours to achieve competency in HC auto gearbox.

Heavy Rigid (HR)

A HR (Heavy Rigid) truck licence in Australia allows you to drive single-unit trucks and buses with three or more axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8,000 kg, along with other specified vehicles.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age – 18 years

  • Must have held a Class C (Car) Licence for at least 12 months (including “P” Plates)

  • Previous manual experience is recommended for unrestricted

  • Must have a current & valid SA Drivers Licence

  • Medical conditions may affect eligibility

  • Overseas Licence evidence MUST be provided if SA Licence has been held for less then 2

Northbound allow approximately 16 hours training to achieve competency in class HR manual gearbox and approximately 12 hours to achieve competency in HR auto gearbox.

To obtain an unrestricted HR licence, you must learn to drive a “roadranger” manual gearbox. We recommend consulting YouTube for an idea of how to use a “roadranger” gearbox.

Light Rigid (LR)

A LR (Light Rigid) truck licence in South Australia allows you to drive rigid vehicles on with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) between 4.5 and 8 tonnes, or buses designed to carry more than 12 adults.

Medium Rigid (MR)

A MR (Medium Rigid) truck licence allows you to drive a rigid vehicle with two axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8 tonnes, and to tow a trailer with a GVM of up to 9 tonnes.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age – 18 years

  • Must have held a Class C (Car) Licence for at least 12 months (including “P” Plates)

  • Previous manual experience is recommended

  • Must have a current & valid SA Drivers Licence

  • Medical conditions may affect eligibility

  • Overseas Licence evidence MUST be provided if SA Licence has been held for less then 2 years.

Northbound Commercial Training have found most applicants require approximately 10 hours training to achieve competency in class LR or MR (manual gearbox).
